  • Q. What country were you staying in?
    • India
  • Q. Where were you doing research?
    • Chennai Institute of Mathematical Sciences
  • Q. How long were you there?
    • Two months
  • Q. What sort of research were you doing?
    • I was using code to create simulations of binary systems
  • Q. Did being abroad influence the kind of research you’re doing?
    • I was placed at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and my advisor was doing mainly astrophysics research so it did influence the research to that extent.
  • Q. What’s the coolest thing about being abroad?
    • Experiencing a culture I’ve never been exposed to before.
  • Q. What’s your favorite new phrase from the language?
    • I can’t say because I didn’t get to learn any of the local language. It was a little difficult to understand.
  • Q. What’s the hardest thing about being abroad?
    • It was difficult with getting used to being stared at every time I even stepped outside. There wasn’t a point in the day where I was being watched.
  • Q. What did you do in your free time?
    • Explored the local area as much as possible. It was nice going to fun places like the zoo and taking surfing lessons.
  • Q. What’s the coolest thing you’ve done or seen while abroad?
    • The coolest thing was taking a trip to go see the Taj Mahal. I’ll always treasure that experience.
  • Q. What advice would you offer others thinking of going abroad?
    • Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Experiencing something new promotes growth in character and that’s what life is about. Expose yourself to a new experience and watch how much you learn about yourself as well as other people and different cultures.
  • Q. What skills have you learned abroad?
    • I learned how to coordinate a trip by myself. The trip to the Taj Mahal was the first time I’ve ever booked plane tickets and a hotel room by myself. I was nervous but took all the necessary precautions and it worked out. Now I’m more confident in travelling by myself in the future.
  • Q. Is there anything you’d do differently or anything you wish you’d have known?
    • I wish someone warned me about being stared at everywhere I went. It might seem weird to say but its better to be frank. It was definitely a shock at first.
