The International Telecommunications Union helps decide which radio frequency ranges are used for what purposes. Only several small ranges are protected for radio astronomy, which means that radio frequency interference can affect a whole radio band if not properly taken care of. Other allocations include wifi, radio stations, television, airplane communications, etc.
