To calculate TOAs, we shift an idealized pulse profile shape and maximize the correlation (area overlap) between it and a noisy data profile. The best fit determines when the arrival time occurs and what the error is on that arrival time due to a finite signal-to-noise ratio. Note that this error is often just called “the TOA error” but formally this is incorrect.
